Perak deploys 83 mobile pumps for northeast monsoon flood preparation

Perak DID mobilises 83 mobile pumps to manage potential floods during the northeast monsoon, focusing on low-lying districts like Manjung

IPOH: The Perak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) has mobilised 83 mobile pumps across the state in preparation for potential floods during the Northeast Monsoon.

Its director, Asnor Muizan Ishak, said 74 pump units were operational on site as of December 4, with nine more on standby.

Perak has a total of 136 mobile pumps of various capacities, including high-capacity units capable of moving up to 20 cubic feet per second.

“These pumps are important in draining floodwaters from low-lying areas into rivers, ponds or the sea,” he said.

Most pumps have been placed in Manjung, Hilir Perak and Bagan Datuk, areas still affected by stagnant water due to low-lying ground.

Asnor Muizan said mobile pumps are a key short-term measure for tackling flash floods where poor drainage prevents water flow.

“During high river levels or heavy rainfall, water in low-lying areas cannot flow out easily,” he explained.

He noted that operating the pumps incurs costs for installation, maintenance, fuel and staffing, and requires supervision to prevent vandalism.

Managing floods in the state requires cooperation between local authorities, land offices, the Public Works Department and other agencies.

“The DID is among the parties that will assist, including by providing additional pumps, boats or excavators if needed,” he said.

With the state in the early phase of the Northeast Monsoon, Perak DID remains on standby to face any possible flooding. – Bernama
