PM Anwar urges social activists to drive positive change for Malaysia

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim calls for wise, organised activism to foster national development, citing S.M. Mohamed Idris as a role model.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has encouraged social activists to continue voicing their views to bring positive changes to the nation’s development.

He said the role of activists is crucial in building a fair and compassionate country that includes all societal strata.

“However, it must be organised wisely, not by bringing voices of hatred, cynicism, often making fools of others,” Anwar stated.

He emphasised that social activism differs from taking a hard political stance, focusing instead on individuals who can help drive national change.

The Prime Minister spoke at the launch of the book ‘The Man Who Could Move Mountains: Reflections on the Social Activism of S.M. Mohamed Idris’ at the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia.

He cited the late S.M. Mohamed Idris, former president of the Penang Consumers Association, as the best example of steadfast activism.

“Uncle Idris is just a figure with a simple style and attitude but his views on the state, the country, and justice are hard,” Anwar said.

He described Idris as a role model who was friendly yet never wavered on key principles, highlighting the need for such thoroughness and courage.

Also present at the event were Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul. – Bernama
