Sarawak flood situation improves with only one relief centre still open

Flood victims in Sarawak drop to 24 as relief centres close, with river levels at most stations showing a downward trend.

BINTULU: The flood situation in Sarawak has improved significantly, with only one temporary relief centre still operating as of Thursday afternoon.

The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee stated that only the Sebauh Community Hall PPS remains active, sheltering 24 victims from 15 families.

Two other centres were closed earlier in the day as floodwaters receded and evacuees returned home.

The Dewan Suarah Bintulu PPS, which housed 121 victims from 32 families, was closed at 1.30 pm.

The Dewan Sri Kemena PPS at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sebauh, accommodating 64 victims from 18 families, was shut at noon.

Flooding initially struck several areas around Kuching city starting December 31 following continuous heavy rain.

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage reported that river levels at most stations are now showing a downward trend.

Water levels at two stations, Long Teru in Miri and Nanga Lemai B, remain above the danger mark.

Only the Stapang B station in Sibu is above the warning level, according to the Public Infobanjir portal.

Water levels at eight other rivers are at the alert level and are also recording a declining trend.
