Petty traders and low-wage earners in Melaka say the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) government aid is crucial for managing daily expenses and business capital.
MELAKA: Petty traders and low-wage earners say government cash assistance is crucial for coping with the rising cost of living.
Recipients of the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) described the aid as a welcome relief that eases the burden of daily expenses.
Petty trader Norshafilah Mein, 35, said the STR helps support the working capital for her home-based cake business.
“This assistance is very meaningful as it helps to rotate my business capital and buy ingredients such as flour, sugar and cooking oil,” she told reporters.
She expressed gratitude for the initiative, which helps sustain her business selling items like curry puffs and doughnuts.
Norshafilah added the aid is especially meaningful as her husband is the family’s sole breadwinner.
She also appreciates other initiatives like the monthly Basic Rahmah Contribution (SARA).
Factory worker Aniza Aznan, 37, said the STR is fully used for her family’s basic needs.
Her husband, who has asthma, can only work from home running an online food business.
“STR is truly helpful, as it is entirely used to purchase household necessities,” she said.
Part-time worker Muhammad Hafifi Shaari, 36, cares for his parents and said the aid has a positive impact.
“Even though the assistance for singles is lower compared to those with families, it is still helpful,” he stated.
He thanked the government and hopes the assistance can continue or increase next year.
Muhammad Hafifi added that he would update his recipient information.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced Phase 1 payments for STR 2026 will start on Jan 20.
