Telecommunications services disrupted after tower fire in Kuala Kangsar

A fire at a Maxis-owned tower disrupts services for CelcomDigi, Maxis and Unifi Mobile users in several villages and a PLUS highway R&R area.

KUALA KANGSAR: Telecommunications services for CelcomDigi, Maxis and Unifi Mobile users have been disrupted following a fire at a tower in Kampung Kelebor near Kuala Kangsar.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said the fire involved a Maxis-owned tower housing transmitter equipment for CelcomDigi and Maxis in the area.

Affected areas include Kampung Kelebor, Kampung Langkap Ketior, Kampung Rambai 7, Kampung Menora, Kampung Senggang, Kampung Ulu Kenas and Kampung Lempor.

Service coverage at the Sungai Perak Rest and Service Area along the North-South Expressway was also impacted.

“The cause of the fire at the tower is still under investigation,” MCMC said in a statement.

Access to the incident location has been closed by authorities to allow further investigations by the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia and other relevant parties.

MCMC has directed the relevant service providers to implement immediate corrective actions.

This includes the preparation of a comprehensive recovery plan to address the coverage disruption.

As an emergency measure, MCMC activated Starlink satellite WiFi facilities at the Sungai Perak R&R to ensure highway users have continued access to telecommunications services.

The commission has also instructed tower owners and service providers to step up maintenance, technical inspections and continuous monitoring at all towers.

This is in line with network reliability requirements and user safety.

The Perak Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call regarding the incident.

The fire was extinguished with the assistance of the landowner.
