Flood relief operations force three Penang schools to conduct home-based teaching and learning, affecting 1,786 students
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Three schools in Penang will conduct home-based teaching and learning on Monday and Tuesday because their premises have become temporary flood relief centres.
State Education Department director Mohamad Dziauddin Mat Saad identified the affected schools as SK Lahar Yooi and SK Padang Menora in Seberang Perai Utara, and SK Guar Perahu in Seberang Perai Tengah.
He confirmed these schools collectively serve 1,786 students whose education will temporarily shift online.
The decision followed monitoring that revealed many classrooms were occupied by flood victims displaced since Friday.
“The department reviewed the situation at five schools used as relief centres and decided that PdPR is necessary for three of them to allow flood management agencies to operate effectively,” he told reporters after visiting victims at the SMK Permatang Pasir relief centre.
Detailed instructions will be issued to schools regarding PdPR implementation and teacher schedule management during this period.
Students affected by floods will be permitted to attend school in casual clothes instead of uniforms next week to prioritise their safety and comfort.
Mohamad Dziauddin also announced the activation of preparations under the Education Ministry’s ‘Ops Payung’ initiative.
This initiative aims to help SPM candidates travel safely to examination centres despite ongoing unfavourable weather conditions.
Data on students potentially affected by floods has been compiled to facilitate early relocation or assistance reaching exam centres.
The 2025 SPM examinations are scheduled to run from November 3 to December 23. – Bernama
