Five women candidates secure victories in Sabah state election

Five women candidates won seats in Sabah’s state election, including Rina Jainal, Julita Mojungki and Isnaraissah Munirah, from 71 female contenders

KUALA LUMPUR: Five women candidates emerged victorious in the 17th Sabah State Election, securing voter mandates across various constituencies.

The successful candidates include Kukusan incumbent Datuk Rina Jainal and Matunggong incumbent Datuk Julita Mojungki.

Also winning were Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis in Usukan, Edna Jessica Majimbun in Inanam, and Nurulalsah Hasan Alban in Sungai Sibuga.

Rina secured victory with a 650-vote majority in a ten-cornered contest, gathering 3,480 votes.

She contested as an Independent after leaving Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah following her three-year membership suspension from November 12.

Julita, who serves as Parti Bersatu Sabah secretary-general, won under the GRS banner with a 334-vote majority after securing 9,096 votes.

Kota Belud MP Isnaraissah Munirah claimed the Usukan seat in a six-cornered fight, defeating former Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

Contesting under Warisan, she secured 6,292 votes with a 442-vote majority.

Newcomer Nurulalsah, representing Warisan in Sungai Sibuga, won with a narrow 88-vote majority against four opponents.

Her competitors included Ismail Md Said from PIS, Noraini Asmatil from PN, Datuk Amir @ Amir Shah Yaakub from GRS, and Datuk Suhaimi Nasir from BN.

A total of 71 women candidates contested the election, representing 11.9% of the 596 candidates vying for 73 seats. – Bernama
