Independent candidates lead Sabah state election with 74 contenders

A record 74 independent candidates are contesting the Sabah state election, surpassing all political parties in candidate numbers for the 17th state polls

KUALA LUMPUR: Independent candidates dominate the 17th Sabah State Election with 74 contenders, surpassing all political parties in candidate numbers.

This represents a significant increase from the 56 independent candidates who contested in the previous state election.

A total of 596 candidates submitted their nominations today for the upcoming polls.

Among prominent local politicians contesting as independents are Kudat MP Datuk Verdon Bahanda, who is contesting the Tanjong Kapor seat.

Former Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah Youth Chief Datuk Fairuz Renddan is contesting the Pintasan seat as an independent candidate.

Incumbent Petagas Assemblyman and PGRS Division Chief Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah Sahari is defending his seat as an independent.

Former Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku Youth chief Jordan Jude Ellron is contesting in Tulid as an independent candidate.

Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah deputy president Datuk Rina Jainal, the incumbent Kukusan Assemblywoman, is also running independently.

Parti Warisan Sabah emerged as the political party fielding the largest number of candidates with 73 contenders.

Parti Impian Sabah follows closely with 72 candidates contesting in the state election.

Gabungan Rakyat Sabah is fielding 53 candidates across the state constituencies.

Barisan Nasional has 45 candidates contesting on its ticket in the Sabah polls.

Perikatan Nasional is contesting in 42 seats throughout the state election.

Pakatan Harapan is contesting 22 seats in the 17th Sabah State Election.

The Election Commission has set November 29 as polling day for the state election.

Early voting will take place on November 25 for eligible voters.
