Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan cautions that unmanaged political differences can lead to government collapse, urging wisdom and responsibility over emotion-driven actions.
KUALA LUMPUR: Political differences must be managed with wisdom to prevent the collapse of a government, said UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
The Foreign Minister warned that unchecked political conflict has paralysed state institutions in several countries.
He said a government’s fall without a clear succession plan creates a dangerous power vacuum, not freedom.
“When politics becomes a field of vengeance, extremist elements emerge,” he said in his speech at the simultaneous opening of the UMNO Wanita, Youth and Puteri general assemblies.
He added that divided leadership opens the door to foreign interference.
“This is what happens when anger overrides wisdom and when power is brought down without the responsibility to rebuild,” he stated.
Mohamad cautioned that such instability would cause economic decline and drive away investors.
The nation’s cherished peace and freedom from violence could also be lost in an instant, he warned.
He urged that any bold political action must be accompanied by strategy and a sense of responsibility.
“Are we going to leave the government tomorrow and allow the country to descend into chaos? No,” he said.
“That is the path of those who surrender to emotion, not the work of statesmen.”
He called on UMNO members to support the party’s role in the Unity Government with constructive views and reasonable criticism.
Mohamad also reminded that repeatedly entering and exiting political alliances is not a genuine solution for rebuilding UMNO.
On Jan 5, UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi affirmed the party and Barisan Nasional would remain in the Unity Government until the end of the term.
This was despite calls from the party’s Youth wing for a withdrawal.
