PAS president says party will propose candidate for PN chairmanship as speculation grows over Muafakat revival
PETALING JAYA: The leadership of Malaysia’s opposition bloc will be on the agenda when PAS meets with Bersatu next week under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition framework.
Responding to questions about the vacant PN chairmanship, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang indicated that his party would put forward a candidate for the position.
When asked whether he might be nominated, Abdul Hadi noted that his current health challenges could influence any decision regarding his potential appointment.
“My health is not in the best condition at present, but this will be part of our discussions,” the PAS leader told the media today.
He emphasised that PAS has numerous qualified members, spanning both political leaders and technical experts, who could fill the role.
Abdul Hadi also left open the possibility of reviving Muafakat Nasional (MN), the former alliance that united Malaysia’s two dominant Malay-based parties, PAS and Umno.
“We maintain positive relations with Bersatu, and our connection with Umno remains cordial as well,” he remarked.
“If it is God’s will, we seek to bring together Malay Muslims and moderate non-Muslims,” he stated.
The PN chairmanship has remained empty since Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin resigned from the role effective January 1, creating a leadership vacuum in the opposition coalition.
Speculation regarding Muafakat Nasional’s potential resurrection has intensified recently amid reported friction between Bersatu and PAS concerning the selection of Perlis’s chief minister.
In parallel developments within the government coalition, pressure has mounted on Umno to reconsider its participation in the Madani administration following the High Court’s recent decision to deny former Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s request to complete his sentence under house arrest in the SRC International Sdn Bhd corruption case.
Umno Youth, under the leadership of Dr Akmal Salleh, is scheduled to convene a special assembly tomorrow to determine whether the party should maintain its alliance with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim-led Madani government.
