STAR party to remain in opposition, will not join Sabah state government

STAR president Jeffrey Kitingan confirms his party will stay in opposition, supporting Sabah’s interests and opposing any undermining of MA63

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) will not join the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) state government.

President Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan has firmly stated his party will continue to act as a responsible opposition.

Jeffrey, who retained the Tambunan seat, reaffirmed STAR’s consistent advocacy for Sabah to be governed by local parties.

“We will support policies that protect the interests of Sabah, and we will oppose any actions that undermine the Malaysia Agreement 1963, the Constitution, or the long-standing struggle for Sabah’s rights,” he said.

GRS won 29 of the 73 seats in the 17th Sabah State Election.

Parti Warisan secured 25 seats, Barisan Nasional won six, Independents won five, and UPKO won three.

STAR won two seats, while Perikatan Nasional, Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat, and Pakatan Harapan each won one.

GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor was sworn in as the 17th Chief Minister of Sabah early Sunday.

Nine other assemblymen were also sworn in as State Cabinet members before Governor Tun Musa Aman at Istana Seri Kinabalu.

The new cabinet includes eight representatives from GRS.

They are Hajiji, Datuk Joachim Gunsalam, Datuk Masidi Manjun, Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, Datuk James Ratib, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, Datuk Rubin Balang, and Julita Majungki.

UPKO’s Datuk Ewon Benedick, Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Jafry Ariffin, and Pakatan Harapan’s Jamawi Jaafar complete the cabinet lineup. – Bernama
