Prasarana launches recycling machines at LRT stations for rewards

Prasarana introduces AI-powered reverse vending machines at busy LRT stations, offering reward points for recycling plastic bottles and cans to boost sustainability.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prasarana Malaysia Berhad has launched Reverse Vending Machines at high-traffic Light Rail Transit stations to promote sustainable urban mobility.

The initiative aligns with the company’s Sustainability Roadmap, which targets a 30% recycling rate by 2030.

Machines have been installed at busy stations including Masjid Jamek and KLCC.

Group Chief Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Sustainable Development Officer Idzqandar Abu Bakar said the technology provides a convenient recycling facility.

He said this approach encourages positive behavioural change through smart technology and reward systems.

One machine, named KLEAN, uses artificial intelligence to accept plastic bottles and cans.

Users receive reward points via the Klean mobile app for recycling these materials.

These points can be redeemed for vouchers from partner merchants like Zus Coffee, Grab and Jaya Grocer.

The ATLAS ECOPOD machine is also available, integrated with adjacent vending machines for direct digital rewards.

Both machines have data tracking systems to monitor user engagement and recyclable material volume.

This supports data-driven sustainability initiatives.

To date, 16 RVM units have been installed at Prasarana-operated facilities.

These include Menara Prasarana and the Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd headquarters.

Prasarana welcomes strategic collaborations and private sponsorships for more installations.

This supports Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s aspirations for a cleaner, greener city.
