A 31-year-old man is remanded for five days after allegedly ramming a pedestrian at a Butterworth toll plaza following a dispute over lane access.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A 31-year-old man has been remanded for five days to assist in an attempted murder investigation at a toll plaza.

The suspect, a businessman, was arrested along with his 23-year-old wife yesterday following a police report by the victim.

Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Helmi Aris said the incident occurred at the Butterworth Outer Ring Road Toll Plaza near Perai on Sunday around 11.30pm.

The victim and his wife were driving towards Penang Sentral when their vehicle experienced an issue at the RFID lane.

“The victim then exited his vehicle, requesting the driver of a Proton X50 behind to reverse his car to make space,” Helmi said in a statement.

Instead of complying, the suspect allegedly shouted at the man before accelerating his vehicle.

The Proton X50 struck both the individual and the rear of the victim’s car before fleeing the scene.

The impact caused the victim to sustain scratches on his big toe and body pain, for which he received outpatient treatment.

A police team from the SPT district headquarters arrested the couple yesterday.

Both individuals tested positive for cannabis, and the man was found to have a prior criminal record.

The Bukit Mertajam Magistrates’ Court granted the remand order against the suspect until Jan 3, 2026.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

The suspect’s Proton X50 vehicle has also been seized by police.
