Malaysia’s RTM apologises for broadcast error naming Joko Widodo as Indonesian president during ASEAN summit opening ceremony
KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Broadcasting Malaysia has apologised for a commentator mistakenly identifying Indonesia’s president during the live telecast of the 47th ASEAN Summit opening ceremony.
Radio Televisyen Malaysia stated it takes the matter seriously and has implemented appropriate measures following an internal investigation.
The investigation revealed the broadcast commentator incorrectly referred to Indonesia’s president as Joko Widodo instead of current President Prabowo Subianto.
RTM extended apologies to President Prabowo Subianto, the Indonesian government, and all parties affected by this broadcasting error.
The department further committed to strengthening editorial control and fact-checking procedures to ensure information accuracy and integrity.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim chaired the ceremony attended by all ASEAN leaders including President Prabowo Subianto.
Other distinguished attendees included United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres and European Council president Antonio Costa.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva were also present at the event.
South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa and World Bank vice-president for East Asia and the Pacific Carlos Felipe Jaramillo joined the gathering.
The 47th ASEAN Summit runs from October 26 to 28 under Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability”. – Bernama
