Sarawak is emerging as a regional renewable energy powerhouse, attracting global investors with its diverse low-carbon resources and new waste-to-energy legislation.
KUCHING: Sarawak is intensifying efforts to transition into a regional renewable-energy powerhouse, with global investors showing growing interest in the state’s clean energy sector.
Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state’s diverse low-carbon resources position Sarawak as a significant player in the emerging new economy where sustainable energy solutions are prioritised.
He highlighted that Sarawak has become the first state in Malaysia to pass legislation enabling waste-to-energy development through the Sustainable Resources and Wastes Management Bill 2025.
The Bill, passed at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, aims to strengthen the state’s governance while modernising waste-recovery practices.
Abang Johari told reporters at the Japan-Sarawak Renewable Energy Investment Forum that “as we move into this new economy, Sarawak will continue to attract investors who share our vision for a sustainable future.”
The Premier emphasised that Sarawak’s commitment extends beyond hydropower to include biomass, natural gas, hydrogen and now energy from waste.
He expressed enthusiasm for partnerships with Japanese companies offering advanced technologies in the renewable-energy industry.
“You have your company, the bank supports you, and we’ve got the resources,” Abang Johari said in his keynote address.
“Combined, we become a major player in energy in this part of the world.”
The event was organised by Yamada Consulting and Spire, supported by the Sarawak Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability.
