Sarawak-Sabah power grid interconnection goes live, boosting supply

The Sarawak-Sabah Power Grid Interconnection is now energised, enhancing electricity stability in Sabah and supporting renewable energy goals.

KOTA KINABALU: The Sarawak-Sabah Power Grid Interconnection was officially energised today, marking a historic milestone in energy cooperation.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the project highlights the deep relationship of trust and strategic cooperation between the two Borneo states.

“The success of this project is a great achievement that highlights the relationship of trust and cooperation between Sabah and Sarawak,” he said at the energisation ceremony.

Hajiji and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Dr Abang Johari Tun Openg jointly officiated the energisation of the 275 kilovolt transmission line.

The Chief Minister said the infrastructure supports the Sabah Maju Jaya development agenda and will reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

“A resilient and sustainable power infrastructure will, in turn, strengthen both domestic and international investor confidence,” he noted.

He acknowledged that electricity demand is rising with population growth and industrial expansion.

The state government’s strategies are guided by the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 to ensure sufficient generation reserves.

Key initiatives include new power generation projects across a diverse energy mix.

This includes gas-based power plants as a transitional source alongside expanded renewables like hydropower, solar, and wind.

Advanced energy storage technologies such as Battery Energy Storage Systems are also part of the plan.

Hajiji said these measures are designed to increase capacity and mitigate supply risks by reducing reliance on any single energy source.

“We remain firmly committed to ensuring that Sabah’s energy sector evolves in harmony with environmental sustainability,” he said.

The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the Sarawak Government and Sarawak Energy for their commitment as a strategic partner.
