Sarawak premier announces RM6.8 billion Northern Coastal Highway using HIM technology to preserve environment in Lawas and Limbang.

KUCHING: Lawas and Limbang will become the first areas in Sarawak to receive an environmentally-friendly highway using innovative construction technology.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg confirmed the Northern Coastal Highway project will utilise Highway Information Modelling technology.

This advanced approach ensures road structures follow natural terrain contours without requiring hill cutting or ecosystem destruction.

“Previously when you built a road, you would cut the hill, now we don’t disrupt the environment,” he stated during the project launch in Limbang.

He explained that HIM technology enables road construction that preserves the surrounding environment through precise terrain adaptation.

The construction method employs digital data and piling techniques to guarantee structural stability even in soft soil conditions.

This innovative approach prevents the common problem of uneven road surfaces developing after several years of use.

Sarawak remains committed to the project despite its substantial estimated cost of RM6.8 billion.

Abang Johari emphasised the project aligns with sustainable development principles and the state’s commitment to preserving northern Sarawak’s natural beauty.

“If the state is developed, people will come from afar to enjoy its natural beauty,” he added.

The modern roadway will enhance connectivity while increasing area value by maintaining existing greenery.

The highway will also serve as an economic catalyst for northern Sarawak’s development.

It will significantly improve transportation links between Lawas, Limbang, and border areas with Brunei and Sabah. – Bernama
