Selangor launches free ambulance service for low-income residents

Selangor’s new Ambulans Kita Selangor programme provides free health transport using 48 ambulances for households earning below RM5,000 monthly.

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has launched the Ambulans Kita Selangor initiative to provide free health transport services for low-income residents.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said 48 ambulances will be deployed under the programme with a RM1 million allocation.

He described the initiative as part of proactive measures to address ambulance response delays through collaboration with St John Ambulans Malaysia Selangor.

“For the initial phase, the AKS programme will be introduced in the districts of Petaling, Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor,” he told reporters after officiating the launch.

The service covers five local authorities and 26 state constituencies from Ijok to Sungai Pelek.

Amirudin said the programme aims to ensure health mobility services reach people quickly with the best possible quality of care.

The free ambulance transport operates between patients’ homes and public health facilities for one-way or round trips.

It specifically targets households earning RM5,000 and below monthly, bedridden patients, and those requiring medical support during transit.

“Private ambulance services can cost between RM350 and RM600 per trip,” he noted.

The service helps reduce financial strain on eligible groups while decreasing workload at public healthcare facilities.

The 48 ambulances will operate on a trial basis until November next year.

The state government will then assess potential expansion to six additional districts.

Amirudin had previously announced the initiative during the Selangor Budget 2025 tabling.

He described it as part of commitments under the 5 Tekad 5 Tahun manifesto for the 2023 state election. – Bernama
