US President Donald Trump commends Malaysia’s diplomacy in brokering Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire, to witness peace deal signing at ASEAN Summit.

KUALA LUMPUR: United States President Donald Trump has praised Malaysia’s crucial role in facilitating ceasefire negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia to restore peace along disputed border areas.

Trump stated he decided to include Malaysia in his regional visit specifically to acknowledge Malaysia’s active diplomacy in helping broker the ceasefire.

He told reporters aboard Air Force One that he informed Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim about owing Malaysia a visit due to their significant involvement in the Thailand-Cambodia peace process.

The presidential aircraft carrying Trump and his delegation is scheduled to land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 10 am today.

Trump will be received by Anwar at the Bunga Raya Complex upon arrival.

On Truth Social, Trump announced he is traveling to Malaysia to witness the signing of a landmark peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.

He expressed pride in brokering the peace deal between Cambodia and Thailand while extending condolences to Thailand following the Queen Mother’s passing.

A joint ceasefire declaration will be signed today between Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet during the 47th ASEAN Summit.

The signing ceremony will be witnessed by both the Malaysian Prime Minister as ASEAN Chair and President Trump.

Thailand and Cambodia have maintained a longstanding dispute over their 817-kilometer shared border.

Recent tensions escalated into military confrontation on July 24 this year.

Anwar hosted a critical meeting in Putrajaya on July 28 between Hun Manet and then Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.

This diplomatic intervention successfully defused tensions along the two countries’ shared border.

The ceasefire represents a significant ASEAN achievement that prevented broader military escalation.

The agreement ensures the safety of thousands of civilians living on both sides of the border.

Malaysia is hosting the 47th ASEAN Summit from October 26 to 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre as this year’s ASEAN Chair. – Bernama
