KPWKM and MCMC collaborate to enhance child protection online, with new rules for social media platforms and 24-hour helpline support.
PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) will intensify child protection initiatives, focusing on online safety awareness and legal enforcement.
Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the ministry is committed to strategic collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
This partnership aims to ensure effective prevention, early detection, and protection measures are continuously implemented.
“These regulatory strengthening efforts are crucial in safeguarding children, who are increasingly exposed to online risks such as sexual exploitation, fraud, cyber harassment and inappropriate content,” she said.
She added that a safer digital environment protects children’s well-being and gives parents greater confidence.
The statement follows an MCMC announcement regarding new rules for major digital platforms.
From January 1, 2026, internet messaging and social media services with eight million or more users in Malaysia will be automatically registered as Class Licence holders.
This “deeming provision” under Section 46A of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 aims to ensure platforms bear clearer responsibilities for user safety.
MCMC stated the provision specifically focuses on protecting children and families.
Nancy emphasised that child protection is a shared responsibility and urged the public to report concerns.
Reports can be made 24 hours a day via Talian Kasih at 15999 or WhatsApp at 019-261 5999.
“Strengthening digital safety requires awareness, unity and continued commitment from all parties,” she said.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) welcomed MCMC’s introduction of the Deeming Provision in a separate statement.
MOE said the initiative would ensure large-scale service providers operate within a clear national regulatory framework.
“Within the education sector, this initiative can enhance the safety of students and education personnel from cyber threats,” the ministry stated.
MOE added it would strengthen cooperation with stakeholders like MCMC and PDRM to improve digital security for students and staff. – Bernama
