Melaka schools to get targeted digital safety campaign next year

Melaka will implement a more targeted Safe Internet Campaign in all schools from next year to boost awareness of online risks like grooming.

MELAKA: The Safe Internet Campaign (KIS 2.0) will be implemented with a renewed, more targeted approach across all schools in Melaka starting next year.

State executive councillor for Science, Technology, Innovation, and Digital Communication Datuk Fairul Roslan Nizam announced the strategy to ensure comprehensive digital safety information reaches all students and staff.

The shift follows preliminary findings from a collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) identifying a need to enhance student awareness.

“We want every teacher to benefit from the input of the KIS campaign,” Fairul Roslan told reporters after the southern region Safe Internet Campaign Carnival at Universiti Multimedia’s Melaka Campus.

He said planning for the focused approach will follow a review of this year’s implementation outcomes.

KIS has already reached 313 of the state’s 317 schools this year, with full coverage across all institutions expected by the end of the current term.

The state government is committed to leveraging KIS as a primary platform for raising public awareness of cyber risks and threats.

The focus will specifically be on combating online grooming targeted at children and students.

Fairul Roslan appealed to parents, educators and the community to heighten vigilance regarding children’s internet activity, especially for those under 16.

This aligns with the government’s policy of prohibiting minors from operating social media accounts.

“We are concerned that harmful activities such as online grooming and exploitation could infiltrate our children’s digital spaces without proper monitoring,” he said.

He noted that while no cases have been reported in Melaka, preventative measures must be intensified.

Close monitoring is crucial to prevent students from falling prey to online manipulation or scams, which could lead to unlawful behaviour.
