Family worried as M’sian earning RM1.9k insist on buying a car due to girlfriend

“When I advised him, saying, ‘Owning a car isn’t just about paying the monthly instalments,’ he brushed it off and said it would be fine.”

A Malaysian woman recently shared her frustration online about her younger brother’s relationship — and it quickly struck a nerve with many.

In a Threads post, she shared that her younger brother earns a basic salary RM1,900 with a take home salary of RM1,400 to RM1,600.

“When I advised him, saying, ‘Owning a car isn’t just about paying the monthly instalments,’ he brushed it off and said it would be fine.”

The sister later found out that the brother’s girlfriend had pressured him into buying a car.

“It even got to the point where her family called my brother stupid and said my family is poor.”

Despite the comments about his family, the younger brother still listens to his girlfriend and insists on purchasing a car due to the constant persistence by his girlfriend.

“What should we do with a woman like this? My family is really fed up with his girlfriend,” asked the woman.

The post sparked heated discussion online, with many advising the family to let the brother learn from his own mistakes.

“Let your brother do whatever he wants, but as a family, don’t cover his food and daily expenses. He’s already an adult. Once he buys the car, only then will he realise the real cost of owning one. If he can’t afford it, the car will get repossessed, he’ll end up broke, his girlfriend will leave him, and that’s when he’ll finally learn his lesson. Your brother is like a cow tied by the nose — gentle advice doesn’t work. Only when he gets burned will he understand,” advised a netizen.

Another netizen came forward sharing that with such a salary, the bank might hesitate on approving his car loan.

“Don’t worry, sis. With your brother’s salary like that, the bank will think twice before approving the loan. I’m speaking from experience as a sales advisor.”
