Selangor ready to bring back students stranded in Jakarta

Selangor government offers to charter flight for 61 students stranded at Jakarta airport due to travel agency issues.

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government is prepared to bring back all students who were stranded at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Thursday.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said they will contact the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta for the next steps regarding the matter.

He stated the state government is willing to charter a flight or make other arrangements to bring the students home.

Amirudin will check with the school and Ministry of Education to determine if any support is needed.

He believes there are issues that need to be addressed concerning the students’ situation.

The Menteri Besar made these comments after officiating the 2025 Selangor state-level Festival of Ideas at Dewan Agung Tuanku Canselor, Universiti Teknologi Mara.

Media reports indicated 61 students from SK Taman Selasih and SMK Bukit Kapar were stranded for over three hours at the Jakarta airport.

The travel agency failed to appear to help sort out their transport and accommodation matters during the incident.

Also present at the two-day FOI 2025 were Higher Education Ministry director-general Datuk Prof Dr Azlinda Azman and UiTM vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Shahrin Sahib@Sahibuddin.

The FOI Selangor showcases various events including pitching sessions, leadership forums, and research exhibitions.

Amirudin also officiated the launch of the inaugural Selangor International Drone Cup 2025.

Approximately 50 local and international professional racers are competing in the two-day event at the UiTM Sports Complex.

Foreign participants come from South Korea, China, Australia, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore.

The inaugural edition is jointly organised by MyDrone, UiTM and Malaysia Sports Aviation Federation.

This event promotes drone sports in Malaysia while supporting the Visit Selangor 2026 campaign.

The campaign aims to position Selangor as a venue for organising international sports in the Asian region. – Bernama
