Malaysia’s Defence Ministry submits 10 innovations for patent protection, including solar-powered water pumps for disaster zones and award-winning technologies.
KUALA LUMPUR: Ten innovations developed by Ministry of Defence personnel have been submitted for patent registration with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said this initiative aims to protect intellectual property rights for high-impact innovations with potential applications across all ministry services.
“For the first time in MINDEF’s innovation history, 10 patent applications have been submitted to MyIPO and are now in the registration process to safeguard the creations of the ministry’s innovation champions,” he said at the ministry’s 2025 Integrity and Innovation Day launch at Wisma Pertahanan.
Among the innovations is the portable Free Energy Water Pump 2.0, which runs on solar energy and functions as a water filter to provide clean water in conflict or disaster zones.
Mohamed Khaled also commended personnel who won six gold, three silver and two bronze medals in international innovation competitions in South Korea and Indonesia.
“At DSA 2024 and LIMA 2025, MINDEF innovations not only gained international recognition but also saved the government millions of ringgit and enhanced defence readiness,” he added.
He said integrity and innovation are complementary values forming the basis of this year’s celebration theme ‘Pertahanan Berintegriti, Inovasi Berkualiti, Aspirasi Malaysia MADANI’.
Mohamed Khaled emphasized that integrity serves as a safeguard against leakages, breaches of trust and abuse of power.
“At MINDEF, we do not merely manage billions in procurement; we shoulder the greater responsibility of safeguarding national security, sovereignty and the welfare of our personnel who sacrifice for the country,” he said.
The event also recognized 18 winners of the ministry-level Innovation and Creative Group competition, four jury-choice winners, and 11 winners of international invention competitions. – Bernama
