535 UMK Kota campus students switch to online learning after floods hit campus and residential colleges, with 527 students relocated within campus
KOTA BHARU: A total of 535 students at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan’s Kota Campus have shifted to online learning following recent flooding in the state.
UMK Vice-Chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Arham Abdullah confirmed the move after continuous heavy rain since last Thursday affected the campus and residential colleges.
He stated the online approach ensures teaching continues while physical lectures will resume only when conditions normalise.
“All affected students will attend their studies online, and an official memo has been issued to the faculties involved,” he told reporters after surveying the campus.
Currently 527 students remain in Kota Campus residential colleges and have been moved to upper floors as a flood precaution.
Eight students from rented houses in Pengkalan Chepa have been temporarily relocated to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Padang Tembak.
The university activated a flood operations room and 24-hour hotline last Friday to coordinate safety and welfare measures.
Arham said the operations room provides latest information and assistance to campus students and staff.
Regular monitoring of residential colleges ensures all safety measures are maintained throughout the flood period.
He assured parents that student welfare including basic necessities and food continues under university supervision.
UMK’s Jeli Campus and Bachok Campus remain unaffected by the current flooding.
The Kota campus and surrounding buildings were submerged yesterday due to continuous heavy rain at cautionary levels. – Bernama
