Vietnam’s Public Security Ministry has proposed a national database centre to combat fake and false information, with fines up to US$7,700 for violations.
HANOI: Vietnam’s Public Security Ministry has proposed establishing a national database centre dedicated to preventing and controlling fake news and false information.
According to a report in the local newspaper Tuoi Tre, the draft decree defines fake news as completely fabricated information, while false information refers to content that is only partially untrue.
The proposed centre would receive reports, complaints, and denunciations related to such information, publicly announce verified cases, and provide guidance to the public.
It would also coordinate data sharing and the labelling of fake or false information among ministries, agencies, and local authorities to ensure nationwide consistency.
The ministry has proposed applying the maximum fines stipulated under the Law on Handling Administrative Violations for related offences.
Penalties could reach 100 million Vietnamese dong (about US$3,850) for individuals and 200 million Vietnamese dong (about US$7,700) for organisations that violate the regulations.
