BEIJING: China’s foreign minister declared that a multipolar world is coming in a veiled warning to Washington ahead of crucial talks between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.
Global markets are closely watching Thursday’s planned presidential meeting to see if it can halt the trade war sparked by Trump’s sweeping tariffs.
Speaking at a Beijing forum, Wang Yi urged an end to politicising economic issues and fragmenting global markets through trade wars.
He criticised frequently withdrawing from agreements and enthusiastically forming blocs without naming specific countries.
Wang stated that the tide of history cannot be reversed as a multipolar world approaches.
Trump began his Asia tour on Sunday culminating in his first face-to-face meeting with Xi since beginning his second presidential term.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng completed two days of trade talks seeking to avoid additional 100% tariffs.
China’s vice commerce minister confirmed that a preliminary consensus had been reached between the two sides.
Bessent announced the extra tariffs had effectively been averted while signalling deals on rare earths and American soybean exports. – AFP
