A drone strike in Russia’s Volgograd region killed one civilian and caused an industrial fire, with Ukraine stepping up attacks on Russian territory
VOLGOGRAD: A large-scale drone attack struck Russia’s Volgograd region, killing one person and igniting a fire in an industrial zone.
Regional governor Andrey Bocharov confirmed the casualties and damage in a Telegram statement on Thursday.
The strikes damaged a 24-storey residential building, with balconies destroyed and windows shattered in nearby houses.
“A 48-year-old civilian man was killed by shrapnel from the attack,” Bocharov stated.
Falling debris sparked a blaze in an industrial area within the Krasnoarmeysky district.
Fire services successfully extinguished the industrial fire after responding to the incident.
Volgograd lies approximately 400 kilometres from the Russian-Ukrainian border and serves as a major industrial hub.
The region hosts significant gas and petroleum refining facilities that have become recent targets.
Ukraine has intensified drone and missile strikes against Russian territory in recent weeks.
These attacks primarily target industrial areas as part of a campaign affecting Russian fuel prices.
Last month, Ukrainian strikes hit a refinery in the Krasnodar region and an oil terminal in Crimea.
Ukrainian forces also targeted an ammunition depot in the Russian-annexed peninsula.
Moscow launched its full-scale offensive against Ukraine in 2022, escalating the conflict.
Russian forces have recently increased aerial attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities and rail systems. – AFP
