Drone strikes plunge Sudanese city into darkness amid fierce fighting

Drone attacks on a power station cut electricity to Sudan’s El-Obeid as army-aligned forces report gains against the RSF paramilitary in the strategic Kordofan region.

PORT SUDAN: Drone strikes have knocked out the power supply in the Sudanese city of El-Obeid.

The national electricity company said the attack on Sunday caused a fire at the El-Obeid power station, halting electricity generation.

The city is the capital of North Kordofan state, an oil-rich region that has become the latest battleground in Sudan’s two-year war.

The conflict pits the national army against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Army-aligned forces announced they had retaken several cities south of El-Obeid from the RSF earlier last week.

A coalition of armed groups fighting alongside the army, called the Joint Forces, said it had achieved “sweeping field victories”.

It said it now controlled several strategic areas after clearing them of RSF elements.

A Sudanese army source told AFP this progress would open the road between El-Obeid and the besieged city of Dilling.

Dilling, in South Kordofan state, is controlled by the army but surrounded by the RSF.

A UN-backed report says the city is in the throes of famine.

The army source added that government forces had cleared a path to Dilling and entered it.

The fighting has triggered a fresh wave of displacement in the region.

The UN’s International Organization for Migration says about 15,000 people have fled North and South Kordofan in the past week.

More than 11 million people have been displaced since the war began.

Many are sheltering in underdeveloped areas lacking nutrition, medicine and clean water.
