Golden Globes nominations set to launch Hollywood’s awards season

The Golden Globes nominations will reveal top contenders like “Wicked: For Good,” “Hamnet,” and “Sinners,” shaping the Oscars race

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood’s awards season accelerates with the announcement of Golden Globes nominations on Monday.

Hit musical “Wicked: For Good,” Shakespearean drama “Hamnet,” and period horror “Sinners” are among the leading contenders.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s political drama “One Battle After Another” and sports dramedy “Marty Supreme” are also top awards hopefuls.

The Globes ceremony on January 11 is considered a key bellwether for the Academy Awards.

Variety senior awards editor Clayton Davis said the headline this year is that “comedy is where the drama is.”

“Wicked: For Good” will compete for top comedy-musical honours against “One Battle After Another” and “Marty Supreme.”

Apocalyptic satire “Bugonia” from Yorgos Lanthimos is also in the comedy mix, with stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons tipped for nominations.

Davis called “Wicked” the “still probably the populist choice” due to its wide appeal.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are awards hopefuls for their leading roles in the musical blockbuster.

Davis predicts the best actress category will be a “Murderers’ Row” of worthy candidates.

Each main category will feature six nominees instead of the previous five.

On the drama side, “Hamnet” stars Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare navigating family tragedy.

The film is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel about the playwright’s son named Hamnet.

“Sinners” features Michael B. Jordan as twins encountering a sinister force in 1930s Mississippi.

The box office hit led the Critics Choice Awards nominations with 17 nods.

Davis said he “will not sleep a wink” until director Ryan Coogler gets an Oscar nomination.

Guillermo Del Toro’s “Frankenstein” adaptation is also in the running for drama honours.

The Globes nominations will help sketch the road to the Oscars, with Academy Award nominations due on January 22.

The ceremony also honours television, with top Emmy nominees expected to dominate.

“Severance” and “The Pitt” lead drama contenders, while “The Studio” and “Hacks” top comedies.

Limited series “Adolescence” is also a strong contender for television awards.

Actors Marlon Wayans and Skye Marshall will announce the nominees from 1315 GMT Monday.

The Globes are in their third year of a revamp following organisational changes.

Last year’s gala hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser drew over 10 million viewers.
