Hong Kong horse racing silent after deadly Tai Po fire tragedy

Hong Kong horse racing at Sha Tin will be silent and behind closed doors, donating HK$70 million to Tai Po fire victims after 94 deaths.

HONG KONG: Horse racing in Hong Kong will proceed under sombre conditions this Sunday following the city’s deadliest fire in decades.

The meeting at Sha Tin will take place behind closed doors as a mark of respect for the Tai Po fire victims.

Jockeys will wear black armbands and observe a minute’s silence during the event.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club expressed deep sadness over the tragic fire at Wang Fuk Court that claimed at least 94 lives.

“The Hong Kong Jockey Club is deeply saddened by the loss of so many lives during the tragic fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, as well as the injuries and personal loss suffered by many others,” the club stated.

All gross income from the race meeting, estimated at HK$70 million (RM9 million), will be donated to fire victims.

This represents Hong Kong’s deadliest blaze since 1948, prompting widespread mourning across the city.

Several other sporting events have been postponed indefinitely according to local media reports.

The South China Morning Post confirmed trail races and rugby matches are among affected events. – AFP
