Israeli man arrested for alleged spying for Iran

Israeli authorities arrest a man in his 40s for allegedly photographing a former PM’s home and other sites under Iranian direction, the latest in a series of espionage cases.

JERUSALEM: Israeli authorities have arrested a citizen suspected of conducting espionage for Iranian intelligence.

The man, in his 40s and from Rishon LeZion, was detained this month in a joint operation by police and the Shin Bet domestic security agency.

A joint statement said the suspect was identified as having photographed the vicinity of former prime minister Naftali Bennett’s home.

He was allegedly instructed by Iranian handlers to purchase a dash camera to carry out the task.

The man reportedly transferred photographs taken in his city and other locations in exchange for money.

This is the latest in a series of cases where Israel has charged its own citizens with spying for Iran since the Gaza war began in October 2023.

In May, Israel announced the arrest of an 18-year-old Israeli for spying on Bennett.

Iran and Israel are long-standing adversaries who regularly accuse each other of espionage.

Last week, Iran said it had executed an Iranian citizen convicted of spying for Israel.

During a 12-day conflict in June, Israeli authorities arrested two other citizens suspected of working for Iranian intelligence services.

Iran, which does not recognise Israel, has long accused it of sabotage and assassinations targeting its nuclear programme.
