Man faces life for attempted assassination of Trump

Ryan Routh, convicted of trying to kill Donald Trump in 2024, could be sentenced to life in prison as prosecutors cite his lack of remorse.

WASHINGTON: A man convicted of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump faces a potential life sentence.

Ryan Routh, 59, was found guilty in September of trying to kill the then-presidential candidate at his Florida golf course in 2024.

Prosecutors have argued for a life term, stating his crimes “reflect careful plotting, extensive premeditation, and a cowardly disregard for human life.”

In a court filing cited by ABC News, they said Routh “has since expressed neither regret nor remorse to his victims.”

The attempt occurred just months before the 2024 election, which returned Trump to the White House.

Secret Service agents chased Routh away after spotting him armed near the course where Trump was playing.

He was arrested shortly after the incident in September 2024.

Routh defended himself at trial, pleading not guilty and claiming he never intended to harm anyone.

Following his conviction, he attempted to stab himself with a pen before guards intervened.

This was the second attempt on Trump’s life during the 2024 campaign.

In July 2024, Thomas Matthew Crooks fired shots at a Pennsylvania rally, grazing Trump’s right ear.
