Russian drone attack hits Kyiv, killing one man and wounding seven people including a child, damaging residential buildings and cars.
KYIV: A Russian drone attack struck the Ukrainian capital early Saturday, killing one person and wounding seven others including a child.
Loud explosions were heard around midnight as air defence forces responded to multiple targets, according to AFP journalists and officials.
“Enemy drones are over the city, with air defence responding. There are multiple targets on the capital’s outskirts,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration on Telegram.
“Currently, in Kyiv there is a total of one dead and seven injured, including one child,” Tkachenko later confirmed.
He identified the fatality as a man.
Mayor Vitaly Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters during the attack.
Residential buildings in several districts and cars sustained damage from the strike.
“There are currently seven injured in the capital. Four of them have been hospitalised by medics,” Klitschko posted on Telegram.
Earlier, he reported that a 13-year-old child was among the wounded.
Mykola Kalashnyk, governor of the Kyiv region, said two women were injured in the town of Brovary.
“The enemy is heavily attacking Kyiv region with missiles and drones. Residential areas and people’s homes are under attack,” Kalashnyk stated.
This week’s attack follows similar strikes earlier in the week that killed seven people in Kyiv.
The assaults coincide with diplomatic efforts involving a US peace plan that Ukraine fears could concede significant territory to Moscow.
Ukrainian negotiators are expected in the United States this weekend for talks on the modified proposal.
