Train collision near Peru’s Machu Picchu injures 15 people

A head-on train crash on the route to Machu Picchu has injured 15, including one seriously, with emergency teams deployed to the remote site.

LIMA: Fifteen people were injured in a head-on train collision near Peru’s famed Machu Picchu citadel on Tuesday.

The accident involved trains operated by PeruRail and Inca Rail on the single track linking Ollantaytambo to the archaeological site.

Cusco police chief General Julio Cesar Becerra confirmed 15 injuries, with one person reported in serious condition.

Videos from passengers showed injured victims beside the tracks with two damaged locomotives nearby.

A dozen ambulances and medical personnel were dispatched to the remote Andean area, which lacks direct road access.

Rail agency Ferrocarril Transandino stated the collision occurred around lunchtime.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts an average of 4,500 visitors daily.

The 15th-century Inca citadel is a major global tourist destination built at an altitude of 2,500 metres.
