Donald Trump says ally Marjorie Taylor Greene has ‘lost her way’ after she criticised his foreign policy focus and broke with him on Gaza and domestic issues.
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump declared that firebrand ally Marjorie Taylor Greene has “lost her way” following her recent critical comments.
The Georgia congresswoman, previously a diehard Trump supporter, has emerged as a rare dissenting voice within Republican ranks on multiple issues.
Greene has broken with the 79-year-old president on matters ranging from Gaza to the affordability crisis in recent months.
The final straw came when she urged Trump to focus on domestic policy instead of foreign affairs during Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s White House visit.
“I don’t know what happened to Marjorie. She’s a nice woman, but I don’t know what happened. She’s lost her way, I think,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
The president suggested Greene was “now catering to the other side” and claimed she had “got some kind of an act going.”
Trump expressed surprise at her comments, stating “when somebody like Marjorie goes over and starts making statements like that, it shows she doesn’t know.”
Greene’s sudden shift has prompted speculation about a potential 2028 presidential bid, though she has dismissed such talk as “baseless gossip.”
The change appears particularly jarring given her history as a fierce defender of Trump’s policies to foreign media.
She previously embraced QAnon conspiracy theories and made controversial statements about California wildfires.
Greene has recently taken a softer tone that conflicts with Trump on growing number of issues.
She broke with other Republicans by calling Israel’s war in Gaza a “genocide” during the summer.
The congresswoman also became a leading voice demanding justice for Jeffrey Epstein’s victims despite Trump’s attempts to dampen the renewed controversy.
More recently, Greene highlighted healthcare and cost of living concerns, telling CNN that “affordability is a problem.”
This came just hours after Trump stated “I don’t want to hear about the affordability.”
Her appearance on left-leaning program “The View” further signaled her shifting political approach.
Ahead of the Syrian president’s visit, Greene urged “nonstop meetings at the WH on domestic policy not foreign policy.”
Her comments echoed Vice President JD Vance’s recent remark that Republicans need to focus on the “home front.”
Trump defended his foreign policy focus, noting “the world is turning out to be our biggest customer.” – AFP
