The United States aims to broker a Ukraine-Russia peace agreement by June and has offered to host talks in Miami next week, says President Volodymyr Zelensky.
KYIV: The United States wants Ukraine and Russia to end their war by June and has offered to host talks between the two sides next week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. The proposed meeting would likely take place in Miami.
US President Donald Trump’s administration has been pressing for an end to the nearly four-year conflict. It recently mediated talks in Abu Dhabi but has so far failed to broker a compromise on the contentious issue of territory.
Russia currently occupies around 20% of Ukraine and is pushing for full control of the eastern Donetsk region as part of any deal. Ukraine insists it will not sign any agreement that fails to deter a future Russian invasion.
“The United States has proposed for the first time that the two negotiating teams — Ukraine and Russia — meet in the United States, probably in Miami, in a week’s time,” Zelensky told reporters. “They say that they want to do everything by June.”
Zelensky has repeatedly expressed frustration that Ukraine is being asked to make disproportionate compromises compared to Russia. He said he would not tolerate Washington and Moscow making deals behind Kyiv’s back, especially on matters of Ukrainian sovereignty.
The two sides have also failed to reach a “common understanding” on control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which Moscow has occupied since 2022.
