THREE Malaysian badminton pairs have advanced to the Australian Open quarter-finals after securing second-round victories in Sydney.
Mixed doubles top seeds Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei comfortably defeated Taiwan’s Liu Kuang Heng and Jheng Yu Chieh 21-16, 21-14 at Sydney Olympic Park.
The Malaysian duo will next face another Taiwanese pair, Ye Hong Wei and Nicole Gonzales Chan, in the quarter-finals.

Men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun progressed with a straightforward 21-11, 21-16 win over Denmark’s Christian Faust Kjaer and Rasmus Kjaer.
They will meet Indonesian pair Raymond Indraa and Nikolaus Joaquin, who eliminated fellow Malaysians Choong Hon Jian and Muhammad Haikal Nazri earlier in the tournament.
Professional pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani battled through a tough three-set match to secure their quarter-final berth.
The second seeds recovered from losing the first set to defeat Taiwan’s Liu Kuang Heng and Yang Po Han 21-23, 21-17, 21-10.
Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin are scheduled to face another professional pair, Goh V Shem and Choi Sol Gyu, in the quarter-finals.
In other matches involving Malaysian players, Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin fell to Japan’s Yushi Tanaka 21-15, 21-12 in men’s singles.
Wong Ling Ching lost to Canada’s Michelle Li 21-16, 21-11 in women’s singles action.
The mixed-nationality pair of Goh V Shem and Choi Sol Gyu defeated Malaysians Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Yap Roy King 21-19, 21-13 in men’s doubles. – Bernama
