Malaysian shuttler Toh Ee Wei pleads for unity and support

National mixed doubles champion Toh Ee Wei calls for constructive support over online insults, urging Malaysians to back athletes in their quest for glory.

KUALA LUMPUR: National mixed doubles star Toh Ee Wei has made an emotional plea for unity and support from Malaysians ahead of the shuttlers’ quest for glory.

She stated that athletes are willing to accept constructive criticism for poor performances but not personal insults, particularly those rampant on social media.

“As Malaysians, we must remain united,” Toh told reporters after a training session.

She emphasised the hard work and pride involved in representing the nation, where winning and losing are inherent to sport.

Toh stressed that attitude and the fight put up for every point are what truly matter.

The 25-year-old admitted to feeling saddened by the negativity but acknowledged the need for athletes to brace themselves for all situations.

“Criticism is normal. If there is no criticism, we won’t be able to improve. But not to the extent of hurling insults…that’s what scares me,” she said.

She revealed that personal attacks had previously been directed at her parents following a series of uninspiring results with her partner Chen Tang Jie.

The pair, who are the 2025 world mixed doubles champions, recently silenced critics by winning the Indonesia Masters title in Jakarta last month.

They defeated Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje in a thrilling final.

Despite the disappointment from harsh criticism, Toh expressed deep gratitude for the solid support from her fans.

She said this continued encouragement spurs her on to achieve glory for the country.
