Malaysian mixed doubles pairs Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin will battle for a quarter-final spot at the Malaysia Open 2026.
KUALA LUMPUR: An all-Malaysian clash in the mixed doubles will guarantee a local quarter-finalist at the Malaysia Open 2026.
World champions Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei are set to face compatriots Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin in the second round.
The fourth-seeded Tang Jie and Ee Wei advanced with a straight-sets victory over Indonesia’s Jafar Hidayatullah and Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu.
They needed just 39 minutes to secure a 21-12, 21-17 win at the Axiata Arena.
Tang Jie said their strategy and on-court communication paid off for the delighted home crowd.
“Of course we want to win if we have the chance this Thursday,” he told reporters.
Tang Jie and Ee Wei hold a perfect 3-0 head-to-head record against Pang Ron and Su Yin.
Pang Ron and Su Yin reached the second round with a comeback win over Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje.
They triumphed 20-22, 21-18, 21-17 in a 72-minute marathon.
Pang Ron expressed delight at recording their first-ever win at the Malaysia Open.
In other matches, the professional pair of Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing lost tamely to Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet.
Independent pair Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien retired just seven minutes into their match against China’s top seeds.
National women’s doubles pair Ong Xin Yee and Carmen Ting also exited the tournament after a 43-minute battle.
