Bayern Munich survive Union Berlin scare to reach German Cup quarter-finals

Harry Kane scored as Bayern Munich edged Union Berlin 3-2 in a chaotic DFB-Pokal match featuring two penalties and two own-goals.

BERLIN: Harry Kane’s first-half header helped Bayern Munich survive a chaotic encounter to reach the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals with a 3-2 win at Union Berlin.

The match featured two Union Berlin penalties and two own-goals from the home side in a wild cup tie.

Bayern took the lead after 12 minutes when a Joshua Kimmich corner deflected off Ilyas Ansah’s thigh and into his own net.

Kane doubled the advantage 12 minutes later, powerfully heading home another Kimmich corner.

Union pulled one back from the penalty spot through Leopold Querfeld after a Jonathan Tah handball.

The hosts then gifted Bayern a third goal just before half-time, with Diogo Leite heading a Michael Olise free-kick into his own net.

Kane conceded a penalty early in the second half for a stray elbow, which Querfeld converted again to set up a tense finish.

Union pressed for an equaliser but Bayern held on to progress to the last eight for only the second time in six seasons.

“It hasn’t been our competition in the past few years,” Kane told reporters after the match.

“Tonight we found a way to get through even if it wasn’t our prettiest game.”

Defending champions Stuttgart also advanced with a 2-0 away win at 10-man Bochum.

Bochum’s Philipp Strompf scored an own-goal and was sent off before half-time.

Deniz Undav sealed the win for Stuttgart with a second-half header, his seventh goal in four games.

“I wasn’t satisfied with the ugly performance,” Undav told German broadcaster ARD.

“In the cup it only matters if you progress.”

Freiburg joined them in the quarter-finals with a 2-0 home win over Darmstadt.

Holstein Kiel triumphed 4-2 on penalties at Hamburg after a 1-1 draw to complete Wednesday’s last-16 fixtures.

Bayer Leverkusen, St Pauli, RB Leipzig and Hertha Berlin had all secured their quarter-final places on Tuesday. – AFP
