Bellingham seals Real Madrid’s Clasico victory over Barcelona

Jude Bellingham’s decisive goal gives Real Madrid a 2-1 win over Barcelona, extending their La Liga lead to five points in tense Clasico clash.

JUDE Bellingham’s first-half strike secured Real Madrid a crucial 2-1 victory over Barcelona in Sunday’s tense Clasico encounter.

The win extends Madrid’s lead at the La Liga summit to five points over their bitter rivals after 10 matches.

Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring for the hosts with his 11th league goal this campaign before Fermin Lopez equalised for Barcelona.

Bellingham restored Madrid’s advantage just before halftime with a close-range finish that ultimately decided the contest.

Barcelona’s frustrations culminated in Pedri’s late dismissal for a second yellow card during nine minutes of stoppage time.

Madrid coach Xabi Alonso celebrated his first Clasico victory after Barcelona had won all four meetings between the sides last season.

“We needed this feeling of being able to win a big game,” said Alonso, referencing last season’s struggles against their rivals.

The match featured several contentious moments, including two disallowed goals after VAR interventions in the first half.

Mbappe later missed a penalty that could have sealed the game early in the second period.

Barcelona assistant Marcus Sorg, standing in for suspended manager Hansi Flick, remained optimistic despite the defeat.

“The season is long, we have 28 more games and we’re not scared about the situation now,” Sorg stated.

The visitors struggled without several key attackers, including Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Dani Olmo.

Teenager Lamine Yamal, who provoked Madrid fans with pre-match comments, was largely contained throughout the match.

“(Yamal) needs more rhythm, more games, on the highest level, it’s normal after injury,” Sorg added about the winger’s performance.

Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni emphasised the importance of responding after September’s derby defeat to Atletico Madrid.

“Against Atletico we didn’t play how we wanted and today we had another chance to show what we can do,” Tchouameni noted.

The victory maintains Madrid’s impressive start with nine wins from their opening 10 league matches. – AFP
