Tottenham sign Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for a reported £34.7 million, boosting their midfield amid pressure on manager Thomas Frank.
LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid.
The deal for the 25-year-old is reportedly worth £34.7 million, with Gallagher signing a long-term contract until 2031.
“I’m so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club,” Gallagher said.
He added that the move happened quickly and he was eager to create special moments with the club’s fans.
Gallagher’s arrival provides a timely boost for under-pressure manager Thomas Frank.
Frank has faced mounting criticism after a poor run of just five wins in 20 matches, including an FA Cup exit last weekend.
The signing also addresses a midfield shortage caused by injuries to Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall, and Pape Sarr’s absence at the Africa Cup of Nations.
“Conor is a top midfielder, who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad,” Frank said.
The manager highlighted Gallagher’s experience, leadership, and pressing ability as key attributes for the team.
Gallagher, who scored 10 goals in 95 games for Chelsea, was previously linked with Spurs before his 2024 move to Atletico Madrid.
He made 77 appearances in Spain but failed to cement a regular starting spot under Diego Simeone.
The midfielder is keen for more regular action to secure his place in England’s squad for this year’s World Cup.
Tottenham won the race for his signature despite reported interest from Premier League rivals Aston Villa.
