Hannah Yeoh urges athletes to stay focused on 200-medal SEA Games target

Youth Minister Hannah Yeoh says Malaysian athletes must stay focused on the 200-medal target as the SEA Games enters its final days in Thailand

YOUTH and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has urged the national contingent to maintain their focus on achieving the target of 200 medals at the ongoing 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.

After six days of competition, Malaysia has secured 103 medals, surpassing the halfway mark of its goal with the Games concluding this Saturday.

Yeoh expressed particular satisfaction with several athletes who delivered unexpected gold medal performances despite not being pre-event favourites.

“Our athletes all have their own KPIs,” she told reporters.

“What this means is that in the minds of our athletes, everyone has a KPI. What is being criticised outside is not true that if there is no target, our athletes cannot achieve gold medals.”

She emphasised the maturity and determination of the national squad, stating every athlete in training ultimately desires gold.

Malaysia currently sits in fifth position on the medal table with a haul of 20 gold, 23 silver, and 70 bronze medals.

Host nation Thailand leads the standings comfortably with 132 gold, 78 silver, and 47 bronze medals.

The 2025 SEA Games, held across Bangkok and Chonburi, began on December 9 and will run until December 20. – Bernama
