Malaysia targets hockey 5s gold at SEA Games debut

Malaysia’s men’s hockey 5s team aim for gold while the women’s squad targets a surprise medal at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.

THE national men’s hockey five-a-side team have set their sights on gold for their debut at the Thailand SEA Games 2025.

Men’s team manager Hasnizam Hassan said a thorough training and selection process has boosted their confidence in striking gold at the biennial Games.

“This is the first time that hockey five-a-side is being contested at the Games, and we have set a target of gold for the men’s team and silver for the women’s team,” he told a media conference.

“However, we are confident the women’s team can spring a surprise.”

The men’s team will be captained by Akhimullah Anuar Esook and includes nine other players.

Hasnizam said Malaysia’s achievement as runners-up in the 2024 Men’s FIH Hockey5s World Cup positions them as frontrunners for the inaugural SEA Games hockey 5s event.

The women’s challenge will be led by Nurul Safiqah Mat Isa, Dian Nursyakira Najwa Al Qadqa Nazeri and Nur Shafika Ahmad Kamal.

All three featured in the 2024 FIH Women’s Hockey5s World Cup.
