Malaysia to propose 38 sports for 2027 SEA Games after Thailand event

Malaysia will table its provisional list of 38 sports for the 2027 SEA Games after the 2025 edition concludes, with the event to be hosted across four states.

BANGKOK: Malaysia will officially table its proposed list of sports for the SEA Games 2027 immediately after assuming the chairmanship of the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) following the conclusion of the current edition in Thailand.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria emphasised that the proposed list of 38 sports for the 2027 Games is provisional.

“As the custodian of multi-sport Games in Malaysia, NOC (National Olympic Committee) of Malaysia has a duty to protect and safeguard the interests of the SEA Games, the SEAGF Member NOCs and the Olympic Movement in the Southeast Asian region,” he said.

OCM stated that Mohamad Norza presented the progress report for the 34th edition during the SEAGF final council meeting for the 2023-2025 term.

The 2027 Games are scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Penang and Johor from September 18 to 29.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced last Friday that the provisional list includes athletics, badminton, football, hockey and karate.

The opening ceremony for SEA Games Thailand 2025 will be held at the Rajamangala National Stadium today, with the event running until December 20 in Bangkok and Chonburi. – Bernama
