HOYA Malaysia’s MiYOSMART lenses proven to reduce myopia progression by 65% in local clinical study with Malaysian children
HOYA Malaysia has concluded its nationwide “A Million Visions” campaign with groundbreaking results from the first Malaysian clinical study on D.I.M.S. (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) technology for childhood myopia control, demonstrating that MiYOSMART lenses can slow myopia progression by up to 65% among Malaysian children.
Landmark Local Research Validates Global Innovation
The clinical study, titled “Effectiveness of DIMS Lens in Slowing Myopia Progression among Malay Schoolchildren,” was conducted by researchers from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and marks the first Malaysian evaluation of D.I.M.S. technology’s effectiveness among local schoolchildren.
Conducted as a prospective randomised controlled trial in Kuala Lumpur, the 12-month study involved 42 primary schoolchildren aged 7 to 12.
Participants were randomly assigned to wear either MiYOSMART lenses with D.I.M.S. technology or conventional single-vision lenses, both prescribed for full-time use.
The results were remarkable. After one year, children wearing D.I.M.S. lenses experienced only a –0.16 D change in myopia and a +0.07 mm increase in axial length, indicating significantly slower progression compared to children wearing single-vision lenses. This translated to an average 65% reduction in myopia progression overall.
Beyond effectiveness, the study confirmed that children adapted comfortably to the lenses, wearing them for approximately 16 hours daily while maintaining clear and stable vision throughout.

A Million Visions Campaign Reaches Children Nationwide
The study’s publication coincided with the conclusion of HOYA Malaysia’s “A Million Visions” campaign, held in conjunction with World Sight Day 2025. The week-long initiative offered free eye examinations for children aged 5 to 12 at over 800 participating Eye Care Professional Optical Stores across the country.
“For more than 30 years, HOYA has been committed to helping Malaysians see clearly. Vision is not just about eyesight; it’s about opportunity, education, and quality of life,” said Lew Chee Quin, Managing Director of HOYA Malaysia.
“Through our ‘A Million Visions’ campaign, we aim to promote early eye checks and raise awareness nationwide. When we create awareness and take early steps together, we’re protecting their future and not just their eyesight.”
The campaign aimed to address the rising prevalence of childhood myopia in Malaysia by making professional eye health assessments more accessible and affordable for families nationwide.
D.I.M.S. Technology: Japanese Innovation Meets Local Validation
MiYOSMART lenses, developed in partnership with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, feature D.I.M.S. technology that has been supported by extensive international research.
The Malaysian study provides crucial local validation, reinforcing the effectiveness of this innovative approach specifically for Malaysian children.
The D.I.M.S. technology works by incorporating multiple defocus segments into the lens design, creating myopic defocus on the peripheral retina while providing clear central vision. This mechanism has been shown to slow the elongation of the eyeball, which is the primary cause of myopia progression in children.

Commitment to Future Generations
HOYA Malaysia’s initiative reflects a broader commitment to safeguarding the vision of Malaysia’s future generations through both research-backed innovation and nationwide public outreach.
“Together with our optical partners, HOYA Malaysia remains deeply committed to ensuring children receive early and proper vision screening,” Lew added.
“Through the ‘A Million Visions’ campaign, we are strengthening our efforts to reach schools and communities nationwide, offering our expertise to support early detection and proactive myopia prevention.”
The closing ceremony of the campaign, held on November 19, 2025, brought together key stakeholders including Dr. Wong King Tung, Principal of Sekolah Sri UCSI Kuala Lumpur Campus, Nigella Ngo, Head of Marketing at HOYA Malaysia, Lew Chee Quin, Marketing Director of HOYA Malaysia, and Esther Lau Siew Sieng, Lecturer of UCSI University.
