Candid reflection on self-acceptance and health challenges

SELENA Gomez is opening up about her body image journey in a refreshing and candid manner. Through a series of Instagram stories, the 31-year-old singer took her followers on a visual trip down memory lane, showcasing photos from different periods of her life.

In one snapshot, she wore a zebra bikini, prompting her to reflect on the inevitability of physical changes over time. Accompanying a more recent image in a black high-waisted bikini, Gomez expressed pride in embracing her imperfections, stating: “I’m not perfect, but I am proud to be who I am. Sometimes I forget it’s ok to be me.”

This recent display of self-acceptance aligns with Gomez’s ongoing commitment to body positivity. Having faced body-shaming comments in the past, the star has consistently stood up against critics.

In a TikTok Stories post from April 2022, she dismissed concerns about her weight and urged others to let go of unrealistic standards.

Even after facing comments about her appearance following the 80th Golden Globes in January 2023, Gomez addressed the issue humorously in an Instagram Live video, involving her 9-year-old sister, Gracie Elliott Teefey.

Beyond societal pressures, Gomez has confronted body image challenges stemming from her health journey. Having undergone a kidney transplant in September 2017 due to complications from lupus, she candidly explained how her condition causes “weight fluctuations”.

In a 2019 interview, Gomez shared how the combination of lupus and necessary medication has led to changes in her weight, emphasising the importance of appreciating one’s unique body and being proud of who they are.
