Make the First move

First City University College is recognised as an institution of higher learning that offers programmes across vast fields of studies through quality and holistic education. With the emergence of IR 4.0, so has the demand for expertise in the engineering and computing industries. With that, the Faculty of Engineering & Computing at First City University College offers Foundation, Diploma, Degree and Post-graduate programmes, specially-crafted for the fast-changing and challenging industries.

From studies in Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology and Information Systems - curriculum for the Electronic and Mechanical Engineering honours degree programmes is approved by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), and provides students with a clear pathway to achieve professional engineer status.

The University College’s annual Innovation Day lso providesa great platform for engineering students to showcase their final project models and prototypes. The exhibition attracts industry leaders, and students are often offered employment on-the-spot during this yearly event.

Winson Mah who graduated with First Class Award in BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering, is one such. “I was employed as a test-programme engineer even before graduation” he shared. Siah Kah Chun, who graduated with a First Class Award Degree in BSc (Hons) Software Engineering, is in the midst of starting up his own company dealing in mobile applications. “The Internet Programming Application subject was very useful to me as I learnt coding and programming which ignited my passion in both engineering and entrepreneurship”, Siah added.

Strong emphasis is also given to students’ achievements and employability. Grauduate of the Sc (Hons) Software Engineering programme Wong Hau Cherng was warded by Nottingham Trent University, UK, and is currently a mobile developer in a leading event-based company. Wong’s Final Year Project titled “Pathway Analysis of Marker Genes for Leukemia Cancer using Enhanced Genetic Algorithm-Neural Network (enGANN)” was also accepted as a short paper in the 18th IEEE International Conference on BioInformatics and BioEngineering held in Taichung, Taiwan.

BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronics Engineeringgraduate, ap Yi Xien recently won first prize at the 2018 Innovation Day event with his project titled, “Modelling and Simulation of Underwater Optical Wireless Communication”. Yap is now pursuing his Master’s Degree with the aspiration to become a successful engineer, like his father. Moreover, the University College’s engineering and computing students re also active in participating in national and state competitions and have attained many awards and accolades.

In mid-2019, the Faculty will introduce two new post-graduate programmes - the Master in Software Engineering and Master in Engineering Management. Students will experience blended learning in both programmes. Students who enrol for the former ill be able to develop technological problem-solving and entrepreneurial skills, identify technology trends, lead and manage software development, and materialise innovative ideas while those who sign up for the latter will receive comprehensive understanding of complex business environments, the incorporation of business and management skills, apart from mastering of technological problem-solving skills in engineering.
