Harimau Malaya di ambang kepupusan, kurang 150 ekor tinggal

Persatuan Pengguna Pulau Pinang memberi amaran populasi harimau Malaya kini kurang 150 ekor di hutan, meletakkannya di ambang kepupusan dan menimbulkan krisis nasional.

GEORGE TOWN: Persatuan Pengguna Pulau Pinang (CAP) memberi amaran populasi harimau Malaya kini berada pada tahap kritikal.

Presidennya Mohideen Abdul Kader berkata spesies itu kini dianggarkan kurang daripada 150 ekor masih hidup di habitat liar.

Beliau berkata situasi itu bukan sekadar krisis pemuliharaan, sebaliknya satu krisis nasional yang membawa implikasi besar.

Kepupusan harimau akan menjejaskan kestabilan ekosistem hutan termasuk bekalan air dan biodiversiti.

Ia juga akan menghapuskan khazanah negara yang menjadi identiti Malaysia.

Ancaman berterusan seperti pemburuan haram dan penyusutan sumber makanan semakin menolak spesies itu ke arah kepupusan.

“Antara 2023 hingga 2024 sahaja, enam kematian harimau dilaporkan akibat kemalangan jalan raya,” katanya.

Beliau turut menyebut tahun lalu bangkai seekor harimau ditemui disorok dalam but kereta dengan enam kesan tembakan di kepala.

Mohideen menegaskan perdagangan global kulit dan gigi harimau terus menjadi ancaman serius.

Kepercayaan tradisional menyebabkan permintaan kekal tinggi meskipun tiada asas saintifik.

Beliau berkata CAP menggesa langkah lebih tegas diambil termasuk memperkukuh penguatkuasaan antipemburuan.

Langkah lain ialah menambah peruntukan rondaan dan membanteras rasuah dalam rangkaian jenayah hidupan liar.

CAP juga menyeru agar kawasan hutan dilindungi serta dihubungkan.

Penglibatan masyarakat Orang Asli dalam usaha pemuliharaan juga perlu ditingkatkan.
